Birth of A Nation Annotation
The first thing that catches my attention is that it is an adaptation of the clansman. This allows me to set the tone for the type of writer and the type of content that will be revealed in the rest of the article.
It was historically groundbreaking for the filming developments but controversial and gaining traction before it was even shown on screen. NAACP worked very hard to ban the film due to the filmmakers putting an aggressive spin on Black men played by white people in Black face and the heroism of the Ku Klux Klan.
The fact that it won as many awards as it did is a metric about what was valued at the time. I find that to be truly disgusting that it was not only adapted from the clansman but another movie, The Birth of a Klansman” was a spin off for that.
It also details Reconstruction Vs. The Civil War era that the confederate held a lot of animosity over being punished for.
