- Gus appears to be dirty. I think this is a clear indication of his status. He has no shoes on and in contrast to the woman’s clothes you can tell that he is not as fortunate.
- Flora appears well clothed and cleaned as mentioned before. She is fetching fresh water and has her hair tightly curled. I feel that in these scenes you can almost feel their contrast in purity.
- The lighting seems to appear shadowy and dark and meant to be seen as menacing or the antagonist in this scene.
- The lighting is brighter as well as the music and both seem to paint her into the pure image as noted above.
- He slow creeps and walks low to the ground. He seems to be a bit stalkerish by his actions. This in totality with other basic cinematic tools allows him to appear clumsy yet intentional.
- We see her playing with her hair and frolicking in the flowers. She is fetching her water and having child like tantrums in the room with the other women before she storms out.
- This question makes me believe my head was in the correct space while watching earlier. I noted that the music for Gus was dark and daunting while the music for Flora was very whimsical
- Flora is oblivious to the danger that she is in. Seeing his panic simultaneously while understanding this would make the viewer anxious because they wouldn’t know if he could save her in time.
- I believe this is very much so how John Tyler Adams would accept this sequence because of the imminent threat he believes there is to white supremacy. And while I think Hoffman would find this to be deplorable due to his quarrels with race amalgamation, I don’t believe he depicted things as predatory. It was just science. A matter of fact.
