CL 2/25

Discourse influences warrants because by embracing the beliefs of the community, you are more readily embraced by the community you would like to be adopted or assimilated into. It encourages people to accept warrants.

Writer: John Tyler Morgan

Tennessee born, Alabama raised, multiple political parties, brigade general for confederate army, attorney, senator for Alabama for 30 years, defeats the Blair bill for education, beats the force bill that makes sure black people were allowed to vote

Issue: The race question in the United States

  • Citizenship
  • Voting rights

Readers?
As a senator, I believe his target audience are the fence sitters. The people who he would like to join his side on the argument of citizenship.

What’s the gap?
The thing he wants his readers to understand is that Black Americans are incapable of autonomy and have nothing to contribute to the country outside of slavery because that is their nature.

“Not to our level, will always be inferior.”

Mass anarchy, further divisions, unwelcome into the white family.
If you interbreed with people of color you will have inferior offspring.

He is introducing suspicion and panic and fear

start thinking about rhetorical appeal again

emotional – making me waders feels so as to motivate a particular action

Trustworthiness – trust the writer through the persona he creates
