HW 1/28

Gee vs Swales (The Fathers of Discourse)

Shared ways of being in the world – Believing in Darwinism and Christianity and how those interface with one another (or don’t) but you act accordingly within each

Like Shrek and his onions… People have layers

Discourse – Shared goals, community and communication

  • Impacts your language
  • How you interpret literature

Talking about a movie with my class with context would be different from how myself and the girls talk about it

Swales – How discourse communities are defined

Gee – How members within discourse recognize one another and “how do I get in to the club”

Ann Johns (Mother of Discourse) – RE: Communities of Practice

She explores the idea of “What if I just don’t fit in”

The evolution of communities and how new members put their own tweak on things and slowly evolve the culture or practices

Mother #2 Elizabeth Wardle – Enculturated

I’m in a new work place – how do I fit in?

You want respect and cooperation? Speak our language. Talk our talk and walk our walk

She refers to the communities of practice instead as activity systems

Literature is more than just text people! You can tell a lot about someone and read them in other ways

Moral of the story: Learning is forever
