CL 1/21

Things that make me feel comfortable in a classroom setting include:

Building rapport – When my professor knows me and I know them, I feel seen and I’m able to connect to the material more.

Equal engagement – When everyone is encouraged to participate and I am in an environment where I feel supported, it takes away the nervousness of speaking out loud.

Clear expectations – Nothing is more daunting to me than feeling lost or that I don’t know what’s going on. It is almost a feeling of, “You don’t know, what you don’t know.”

Things that make me uncomfortable in a classroom setting include:

Speaking out of turn – Many times it is already very difficult to articulate ideas in front of the class, speaking out of turns amplifies this and tends to invalidate myself and as an empath, I feel for other people when they are spoken over as well.

Joel Stein, an obvious and avid Yankees fan to the common reader, wrote this article to appeal to readers who identify with the superiority of the Yankees and America. He provides his version of support for why Americans and the major baseball franchise are and will be inarguably the best this world has to offer. From these statements alone, it is easy to see that more than the yankees or america, Joel writes to defend elitism. However, upon further review, his work is satirical.

In the true spirit of satire, Joel criticises the opposing views of people who support any other team or even other countries, such as Canada, distasteful and absurd going to extremes to prove his “point of view.” In order to illustrate how ludicrous these claims are, treats opposing views of the article radically unfair.

The rhetorical context of this article follows the announcement of the hefty salary and transition of notable player, Aaron Rodriguez, to the Yankees. It is intended to draw attention to domination as the title suggested; Colonialism, patriotism, capitalism, etc.

This article is intended for those with a sense of humor as stein appeals to the emotions and invokes a sort of “eye roll effect”as you engage with the article. He addresses his audience by continuously pushing the bounds and relating the Yankees to historical events of significance.

While the authors induction skills are found throughout the article in spirited words and comparisons of their domination to that of the Alamo, deduction skills are not used as much to expand upon the idea further. However, since this article is not scholarly in nature, it is understandable due to the audience being different.

Because the author looks to provoke emotions with a lack of reason rather than the use of reason, his points are well conveyed.
